In October of 2003, I received The Texas Conference for Women Scholarship from Rick Perry, the Texas Governor. I filled out the application expecting to get rejected due to my immigration status, but instead I was awarded a $10,000 scholarship by Rick and Anita Perry to continue my education in the field of business.
The award certificate states “remember always that you are the Texas of Tomorrow and one of our great state’s brightest rays of hope for the future,”- me, an undocumented immigrant at the time— I was the future of Texas. I believed it too.
I am thankful for the opportunity I was given to continue my college education, I am thankful that my parents brought me to this great nation. I am thankful for House Bill 1403.
Was I so scary? Did the National Guard need to keep me away to keep Texas safe?
This picture still hangs in my home office- it reminds me every day that all I needed was an opportunity.
